Mel Gibson, Rev. Ted Haggard, and a small host of other people who have professed their faith in Jesus, who have claimed a renewing or "born again" experience of faith, have over the years embarrassed the Christian Church by their sins (the world not caring much about the concept of sin might call it "their antics"). The Christian Church does not excuse their sins, it does not explain away their sins, and it does not compare their sins with the sins of non-believers to try to make them look better. The Christian Church admits that what the Bible says is true! The human race is made up of people who by nature have a tendency to fall into sin, to hurt the testimony of the church, and to turn their own lives into a train wreck IF the Divine Engineer does not intervene. For these sinners who have been revealed to be continuing in their sin there is a tragic consequence that occurs for the faith. Here is how the late Bible Commentator William Barclay describes it: "When we sin the world will say: 'So that is all that Christianity is worth. So that is all Christ can do. So that is all the Cross achieved.' It is bad enough that when a Church member falls into sin he brings shame to himself and discredit on his Church; but what is worse is that he draws men's taunts and jeers on Christ." Let me assure you, a relationship with Christ is something that delivers men and women from sin. When believers in Jesus sin He is not to blame, we ourselves are.
