A former Archbishop of Canterbury speaking some years ago made the following call to theological understanding to Muslim leaders. He said: "Sadly, apart from a few courageous examples, very few Muslim leaders condemn, clearly and unconditionally, the evil suicide bombers who kill innocent people. We need to hear outright condemnation of theologies that state that suicide bombers are 'martyrs' and enter a martyr's reward. We need to hear Muslims expressing their outrage and condemning such evil." (quoted in Londonistan, p. 142). I think he's right. People who are men and women of good will ought not keep silent about such awful killing. Perhaps, the murderers have distorted the faith of Islam, but if so shouldn't Muslim leaders themselves be out there trying to make the majority of other Muslims aware of that distortion? Shouldn't their voices be heard everywhere around the world calling for a rejection of violence?
